I’ve been seeing these crazy billboards all around town the past few days. They are just plain white billboards with letters declaring hate towards “Sarah Marshall”. They are obviously promoting something, but its really hard to tell exactly what from the words “You Suck Sarah Marshall” scrawled across a billboard. Turns out it’s a movie.
One billboard that really frustrated me said “My Mom Always Hated You Sarah Marshall”. I don’t understand why advertisers have such an easy time pitting women against each other, and putting women down in order to sell a product. Judging by the many billboards I’ve seen through out LA, this movie obviously has the money to spend on an extensive ad campaign. Why not do something creative? They went to the trouble of creating a blog by fictional character. Why not do a little more work and come up with a less misogynistic way to market the film? As a woman, I was offended by reading the hateful messages directed to “Sarah Marshall”. I can only imagine that little girls reading these statements are also affected by them.
This ad campaign was successful in getting my attention, but it not in the right way. I will not be watching this movie. In fact, I hate you “Sarah Marshall” advertisers!
Little girls do not need to be exposed to any more negativity regarding body image!!
Women hating other women. NOT a good way to advertise a comedy.
this adds are about a movie
It almost doesn’t seem like anything harmful to the average person, but in reality “Sarah Marshall” exhibits the stereotypical young American girl.
It’s like transference, or projection or whatever.
This film is obviously not marketed to women, but at the same time it’s set up like a “chick flick”, so I don’t know how the hell they plan to make their money.
Very keen observation. =)
Funny you should mention this!
When I first started seeing the Fat in the Jeans one, I said to myself, “what the hell is this crap.” So, I found out it was a movie, and decided exactly what you did! I will not be seeing this, and in fact, I will be trying my hardest to stop everyone I know from seeing it as well.
They should have spent the budget on something they could be proud of, like charity!
The fat comments to me are as bad as saying the “N” word. Why can we call people fat and nobody blinks but use a racial slur and its on the 11 0’clock news.
So many women have gland problems and other issues that effect thier weight and these dumbass comments do nothing but hurt.
Wheres the freakin’ respect…
I love ya I really do, But I think you have taken the ads the wrong way…The movie is about a guy who is in love with his girlfriend and she just breaks up with him out of the blue and he is very hurt…and as in the title of the movie “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”…he is doing his best to get over her…men and women both go through that stage of hating the ex and saying bad things about them…the ads/billboards just verbalize what is going on in the guys head…
IMDB.com quote…
Plot Outline: Devastated Peter takes a Hawaii vacation in order to deal with recent break-up with his TV star girlfriend, Sarah. Little does he know Sarah’s traveling to the same resort as her ex … and she’s bringing along her new boyfriend.

I dont agree with negative images of a bigger girl being unatractive…because that is just not true at all…but the movie is a comedy and we have to enjoy life for what it is at times…not all that serious…Again April I love ya and much respect to you beautiful…
I linked to you via an article on jezebel!
I have a friend named Sarah Marshall, and she freaked out when she saw the ads for the first time and didn’t know about the movie. She thought someone was playing a sick joke on her. I told her that she should sue them for emotional damage.
